Film Independent Spirit Awards 2019

Stay tuned and refresh the page. Editor-In-Chief Adam Kautzer is covering the Press Room and all the going on’s at the Awards Show.

NOTE there is a lot of video that will be updated on this page of the winners discussing their films and wins.

The great Lulu Wang on her amazing film The Farewell

4:30 PM – BEST FILM goes to THE FAREWELL!!!! Congratulations, Lulu Wang!!!!

4:20 PM – BEST FEMALE LEAD goes to RENEE ZELLWEGER!!!!

Note that Josh Safdie points at me and makes a comment, which you’ll have to watch to hear. Sandler does answer questions too, which is the reason for the length of the clip as it’s essentially two pressroom interviews in one long video. Well worth your time especially for a brief appearance by Opera-man.

4:11 PM – BEST MALE LEAD goes to THE SANDMAN!!! Sandler jumps on stage and gives a real speech … funny as hell. That Billy Madison voice. Damn. “The guys who lost Adam fucking Sandler”, you are a genius. Yes, you were snubbed. Fucking A!!! You’re a god. You made me laugh when I needed it most. You’re a mensch for thanking all your comedy cast and crew. Dude, you’re the most real.

4:02 PM – BEST DIRECTOR goes JOSH and BENNY SAFDIE for UNCUT GEMS… Your speech is classic Uncut Gems!!! You are heroes. The Oscars don’t deserve you guys.

3:50 PM – Sometimes going to the restroom pays dividends. Like that time I ran into JOSH SAFDIE!!!! The gent was a mensch beyond compare. Letting me geek out with you was a highlight. Letting me a total dork and get a selfie… the best sir.

LAURA DERN. LAURA DERN. LAU-RA-DERN!!!!

3:50 PM – The Gay Men’s Chorus ode to the Gayest Moments of 2019 has to be one of the best video montage moments and musical numbers of recent memory. All hail the Laura Dern.

3:45 PM – THE ALTMAN AWARD is presented by Nic Cage to A MARRIAGE STORY is the strangest but most fitting award presenter. Baumbach’s speech is fitting honoring Altman. Yes, you should have cast Nic Cage, Baumbach.

3:39 PM – BEST SUPPORTING FEMALE goes to ZHAO SHUZEN in an upset!!! Go team FAREWELL.

3:35 PM – Video proof of my questions asked to Dafoe and Bong will be up after the show.

Proof that I am a semi-journalist asking Bong Joon-ho (via his wonderful translator) a question about developing the idea for Parasite.

3:30 PM – I asked BONG JOON-HO a question… He, through his translator, answered in the most Bong Joon-ho manner. I can die a happy film critic.

The cast and crew of Give Me Liberty commenting on the importance of the Cassavetes Award.

3:25 PM – GIVE ME LIBERTY wins JOHN CASSAVETES AWARD. The award is given to a feature made for less than $500,000.

3:22 PM – BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY goes to NOAH BAUMBACH

3:15 PM – BEST INTERNATIONAL FILM goes to PARASITE!!! Go, Bong Hive. He’s getting a standing ovation. He’s earned this. Hopefully, the Oscars feel the same. Love his joke about his wonderful translator.

3:10 PM – THE LIGHTHOUSE parody with Michael Shannon is too damn much.

3:05 PM – BEST FIRST FEATURE goes to OLIVIA WILDE’S BOOKSMART

3:00 PM – SEE YOU YESTERDAY wins BEST FIRST SCREENPLAY for screenwriters Fredrica Bailey and Stefon Bristol

2:42 PM – BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY goes to THE LIGHTHOUSE

2:40 PM – Kelly Reichart gets a mid-career award aka The Bonnie Award! This is the third time this specific award has been given out to a female filmmaker in support of their talent!

2:35 PM – BEST DOCUMENTARY goes to AMERICAN FACTORY (Go The Obamas)

2:33 PM – BEST EDITING goes to UNCUT GEMS

2:20 PM – Willem Dafoe enters the press room. The guy is amazingly generous. I got to answer him a question about the Lobster Speech. He even stands up against the inevitable Batman and Superhero questions. Fantastic. Video soon.

Here our EIC AW Kautzer ask Dafoe about the infamous Lobster Speech!!!

2:14 PM – BEST SUPPORTING MALE goes to Willem Dafoe and his amazing mustache.

2:06 PM – New Goal… get a selfie with Nicholas FRIGGIN Cage!!!

2:05 PM – Aubrey is doing a whole Judy Garland musical number.

2:00 PM – The show begins with Josh Miller (the founder of Film Independent) and Aubrey Plaza doing her Aubrey Plaza thing.

12:45 PM – In the Pressroom after the Press Line. Unfortunately, we could not get that Matthias Schoenaerts selfie or video that Marie wanted. Maybe after the awards!
