Our Fantasia Film Festival 2026 coverage continues with the dark comedy Unidentified Murder: alien abduction, murder, blackmail, marriage proposals, all in the name of social media.
Directors Kwok Ka-Hei and Jack Lee Chun-Kit have created a film in Unidentified Murder that isn’t easily described. A film that audaciously layers genre upon genre upon genre in its attempts to entertain. Like the characters at the end, one will be surprised at how adroitly perfect it all comes together.
What begins as a game of one-upmanship between a social media influencer, Man (Renci Yeung), and her boyfriend, Mark (Ling Man Lung), with the aid of his gambler friend, Kit (Ronald Lam), quickly spirals out of control over the course of one night in the middle of the wilderness in Hong Kong. Mark and Kit have kept the secret of their friend’s disappearance twenty-five years prior as an alien abduction, propagated by one-time radio host and now YouTube Alien Conspiracy theorist Stardust Master (Kenny Wong). This, along with many other secrets, comes out over the course of a night that involves double, triple, and quadruple crossings, with an actor, Kim (Chan Charm Man Peter), seeming in the middle of everyone’s plan.
For a film that features so many lies, tricks, and deception, Unidentified Murder is a super sweet film about friendship and growing up. How it manages not just to string along the plot but to tie everything up is almost Coen-esque in its execution, and that is part of its charm. Directors Kwok Ka-Hei and Jack Lee Chun-Kit (who co-wrote the script with Choi Ka-Hang, Ho Siu-Hong) know how to deploy jokes, plot points, and characters for maximum effect. It becomes an altogether delightful film in how it continues to unravel and resolve itself at one. To say anymore would be to ruin a surprise comedy confection.
