Break Free – Fantasia Film Festival 2026

Break Free

Our Fantasia Film Festival 2026 coverage continues with Break Free; a Yakuza enforcer becomes a TikTok dancing sensation.

Break Free is a rare comedy that breaks the confines of the country of origin.  Its story of a low-level yakuza enforcer finding joy in dancing is a universal one that transcends subtitles.  Armed with a winning tour-de-force performance by lead actor Akito Fujii, Break Free, like The Full Monty or Shall We Dance, finds characters sparking their joy from moving their bodies.

The film finds its comedic sweet spot between the dance studio, where our lead is forced to contain his rage and propensity for violence, and the back alley, restaurants, and dive bars that his Yakuza clan makes their turf.  This isn’t a one-note/joke film.  Part of the brilliance of Break Free is how writer/director Yu Nakamoto brings a complexity to each situation, in an ever-increasing surprising situation.  Nakamoto’s script never gives us an easy answer and always zigs when you expect it to zag, finding drama and comedy when you least expect it.

A true delight for fans of comedies and those into hardcore Yakuza films.  Break Free’s true magic trick is finding the correct balance in tone and creating a film that satisfies both genres with eq       ual aplomb.

Break Free plays at the Fantasia Film Festival on July 18th
