The Films of 2020

Soul

Release Date: June 19, 2020

Director: Pete Docter

Why we’re dying to see it? Pixar has been a tricky studio as of late (lets be honest, for the last decade) for we here at The Movie Isle.  Toy Story 4 is not a good movie (though Forky is possibly the best Pixar character in a long time. All we want is the Forky/Olaff teamup movie you didn’t know you wanted) .  The rest of their output, Inside Out withstanding, is no better than any other studio producing animated fare.  Soul looks to be a return to form (much like Inside Out) taking a high concept and imbuing it with heart and soul (yeah, I went there… teehee pun number two) that made the first 10 or so Pixar features so special (minus anything with the CARS moniker on it).  Docter specializes in emotional terror, see UP for the proof, which has us ready to be amazed and emotional in the theater.  Add in very non-PIXAR composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross into the mix. What you get is something that could very well be something truly special.

Tenet

Release Date: July 17, 2020

Director: Christopher Nolan

Why we’re dying to see it?  Christopher Nolan.  Not enough.  Add John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki for star and acting power.  An amazing premise.  Shot on 65mm and Full Frame IMAX (almost one in the same).  What is there not to be all in for? Even someone who isn’t a Nolan Fanboi can agree this one looks amazing.

Note: Do NOT believe the rumors about this being some sort of side sequel to Inception. Though interesting that’s just Reddit being Reddit with their Head Canon.

Coming 2 America

Release Date: August 7, 2020

Director: Craig Brewer

Why we’re dying to see it?  After the success of Dolemite is my Name we were hoping that Brewer and Eddie Murphy would find another project to work on.  Imagine the delight and fear that this Thirty Years in the Making Sequel has us gripped with when announced.  One is hopeful that Brewer, Murphy, all the returning cast, and Rick Baker delivers something as special as the first.

Note: EIC Adam considers the original one of the greatest comedies of all time.

Bill & Ted Face the Music

Bill, Death, and Ted
As the fates intended it to be…

Release Date: August 21, 2020

Director: Dean Parisot

Why we’re dying to see it? Keanu,  Keanu,  Keanu,  Keanu,  Keanu.  Did we mention, Keanu???

Da 5 Bloods

Release Date: Summer 2020

Director: Spike Lee

Why we’re dying to see it?  Lee continuing his dive into genre but from a completely Spike Lee-centric point of view is something of a godsend to all of us Spike Lee fans. It gives Lee the money to make films on large canvas. It also allows Lee to subvert the genres to his own means (see what Lee did with the Undercover Cop genre with Blackkklansman).  Here Lee takes on both the War Vet film and the Treasure Hunt film and been given Netflix money to do so.  Think Deer Hunter meets Treasure of Serra Madre but done in the way that only Spike Lee can make a film.  If that isn’t enough, add Chadwick Boseman, Delroy Lindo, Jean Reno, and Paul Walter Hauser to that mix and it’s a can’t miss event film.
