Fantasia is back, and we’re covering it! Our Favorite Festival is back with a whole lot of awesome sauce for your eyeballs. So, buckle up, because we’re diving into some of the genre greatness that the Mad Geniuses at Fantasia have in store for you this year.
In the immortal words of Jesse Spano, “WE’RE SO EXCITED!” for the return of the Fantasia Film Festival. Ready to cover the Festival (remotely, thank you very much) with bated breath. Here are just a few of the films that we’re excited to watch in the coming week (or two) of one of the very best in genre film festivals in the world…
Los Vampires
What sounds like a spiritual cousin to the brilliant Shadow of the Vampire has us brimming with excitement. The fictionalized tale of the two Dracula films being made at Universal in 1931, as dead bodies being turned up on-set. Add Henry “brotha” Ian Cusick and Thomas Kretschmann as the dueling Draculas into the mix, and you have a film that could be one of the best of the year, let alone of the festival.
Break Free
Yakuza films in all shapes and sizes are our bag here on the site. A comedy about a Yakuza enforcer that goes viral for dancing and proceeds to learn how to actually dance … well, we just have to see it for ourselves.
Hot Spot
If you’re a gamer like this reviewer is the first thing one thought about was Cyberpunk 2077 as much as it was Blade Runner when seeing the effective trailer for Hot Spot. Director Agnieszka Smoczyńska has gotten our attention with her Mermaid musical horror romance The Lure almost a decade ago. Color us very, very, very interested that she’s working with Noomi Rapace and Reika Kirishima (of Drive My Car fame) amongst others.
The Last Temptation of Becky
If you know the Becky franchise then … nuff said, but then add in Neil Patrick Harris in full villain mode, you’ve got us positively ecstatic. If you don’t know Becky and Wrath of Becky… get up on those first two films immediately and prepare to be rocked.
Kung Fu
Fantasia always introduces some of the best martial arts films of the year. This looks to be what The Forbidden Citywas last year but just an entirely different flavor.
God Skin
Hot Spot isn’t the only Cyberpunk-influenced kid on the block. God Skin is a Muay Thai futuristic action thriller we’ve been waiting all of our lives for (well, at least since Ong Bak melted our faces two decades ago).
