Aïcha – Manchester Film Festival 2025

Aïcha

An opportunity to reinvent herself is placed in the lap of a young Tunisian woman following an accident. Aïcha plays at Manchester Film Festival 2025.

Imagine living a life of struggle and disillusion with no apparent prospects on the horizon when suddenly, the opportunity to escape and start afresh miraculously appears. This is precisely what happens to Aya (Fatma Sfar), a woman in her late twenties, still living at home with her parents in southern Tunisia and working in a local hotel.

Following an accident Aya seizes her chance – she flees to Tunis, adopts a new identity, and begins to build a new life. The bubble bursts, however, when she is witness to an attack, and becomes involved in the police investigation.

Aïcha opens with the statement that it is freely based on a true story. Which parts are more true than others would be interesting to know, nevertheless one can assume that the major themes are ones which are prominent in Tunisian society.

The film explores police corruption, the wealth gap, the dearth of opportunities for young people (particularly women) and, above all, male dominance and violence.

Key to everything is Fatma Sfar as Aya. Aïcha is Aya’s journey filled with unexpected events which threaten to blow her new life apart. Sfar’s Aya can be doe-eyed and submissive when required, but she also has an intelligence and self-determination which gradually allows her to regain control of her life and make an important decision as to how to move forward.

Premiering at last year’s Venice Film Festival, Aïcha is a highly engaging and interesting film which I would recommend if it comes your way.

Aïcha plays at Manchester Film Festival (14th – 23rd March 2025).
