Wheeling its way into UK cinemas from 14th March, the French comedy Oh My Goodness! is a fun, lightweight caper featuring two groups of rival nuns (yes, you read that correctly!) trying to raise money for a good cause.
Oh My Goodness! is a frothy, silly, entertaining 87 minutes of French daftness. As far as I can see it contains no depth nor message, and its existence is purely to satisfy the need for an hour and a half of light French humour.
The film opens with a drone shot sailing over beautiful, hilly countryside before focussing in on a nun twirling around joyfully, in obvious homage to The Sound of Music.
This is Sister Beatrice (Guilaine Londez), who belongs to the Convent of St Benedict, a convent which appears to have only five sisters living there. Led by Mère Véronique (Valérie Bonneton), this eccentric group decides to raise money for the local elderly residential home. Their chosen method of fundraising is to enter a bike race – even though they don’t know how to ride. To confound things, the rival convent (if that is, in fact, a concept), led by Mother Véronique’s nemesis Mother Josephine (Sidse Babett Knudsen), also enters the competition, and the newcomers appear to have way more experience on two wheels.
Once the flimsy premise has been established, the film becomes a comical sabotage and rivalry caper, lightweight, yes, but there’s no denying it is sharp, finessed and fun.
Valérie Bonneton and (an almost unrecognisable) Sidse Babett Knudsen are safe hands into which the script has been delivered, and special mention to Louise Malek, playing the trainee sister Gwendoline, whose sass, spark and warmth bring a real zip to proceedings.
Set in beautiful French landscapes where the weather is always perfect, Oh My Goodness! is definitely funny, and doesn’t outstay its welcome. It may not have you rolling in the aisles or guffawing uncontrollably, but if you’re in the mood for frothy silliness then you could do worse.
Oh My Goodness! will be in UK cinemas from 14th March 2025.
