A woman gets her vengeance on the small rigid community that left her helpless in The Severed Sun – playing Fantastic Fest 2024.
The Severed Sun is an excellent slow-burn folk horror with menacing performances by Toby Stephens and Jodhi May.
Magpie (Emma Appleton) a young wife gets the strength to do what has to be done to her abusive husband. The lengths to which she goes to do this instantly come under the gaze of the small strict religious community her father (Toby Stephens) lords over. Was it Witchcraft that Magpie used or another sort of dark magic? Slowly, like an ever-tightening noose Magpie, her father, and the rest of the community will feel and account for secret trespasses.
Writer/director Dean Puckett in his debut feature manages an impressive feat in any debut, a good film that shows the promise of a filmmaker. Between the oppressively bleak tone coupled with outstanding performances from the entire cast The Severed Sun is well worth investing the 80 minutes into. There isn’t anything we haven’t seen from folk horror entries of similar ilk. The Severed Sun is elevated because of the care and passion Puckett, the cast, and the crew put into the movie.
The Severed Sun played Fantastic Fest 2024 on September 22nd and September 24th
