Mash Ville – Fantasia Film Festival 2024

Mash Ville

Mix in Moon Shiners, Killer Cultist, and below-the-line crew of a Film production with a huge dollop of Coen Brothers storytelling you get Mash Ville.  Playing at Fantasia Film Festival 2024.

Co-writer/Director Wook Hwang creates a heady concoction of violence, alcohol, and religious zealotry in the wild comedy of errors Mash Ville.  The tightrope of style and tone is successful in its ability to twist and turn its nervy narrative for gold.

Two Cultists collecting murdered bodies for a purpose.  A Make-up FX artist on a production that won’t pay her.  A trio of brothers collecting bad moonshine.  A lunatic bully of a small-town cop.  All these souls converge on a small town with explosive results of comedy and violence.  To what purpose and end?  Only the Cultists know for sure.

To discuss the entirety of the plot and machinations of Mash Ville would not only take a large portion of space but it would ruin the strange delights held within this cinematic riddle.  More akin to the work of the Coen Brothers.  Mash Villeis less action comedy and more the foley of the universe and the luck of the stupid.  Director Wook working with cinematographer Kang Hyun-gyu creates a film with more importance on the negative spaces and the disquieting silences than there is on the narrative.  The result is something that is greater than its parts and is as confounding as it is hilarious.  A film with puzzle pieces so disparate and seemingly incongruent that the only choice one has is to buckle up and go along for the ride.

Those who do settle into the particular rhythms and beats of Mash Ville will be rewarded with a film that in fact connects its story points as adroitly as any film of its type.  Mash Ville is one of the more uniquely mysterious and funny films in recent memory.

Mash Ville played Fantasia Film Festival 2024 on June 21st
