A Blind Cop and an Assassin make an unlikely team as they attempt to find the cop’s daughter who’s been kidnapped in Blind War. New to Blu-ray from Well Go USA.
The Film
Note: This film has scenes of sexual assault and sex trafficking.
What one can appreciate more than anything else about Blind War is the lean and economical storytelling of the film at around the 100-minute mark. Yes, Blind War is equal parts Taken and John Wick: Chapter 4 without the latter’s unheralded action sequences and Donnie Yen. Andy On as the recently blinded cop in search of the sex traffickers that took his daughter does a great job of bringing the gravitas to the role. It’s a role that’s as old a troupe as any in the action genre in Asia.
After being blinded in a violent court house triple cross gone awry by husband and wife assassins killing the Local Crime lord but blinding a SWAT Captain. To make matters worse the Captain is forced to take responsibility for this. Through all of this only the fact his daughter remains a bastion of light. That is until sex traffickers take her for their own nefarious needs. Armed with purpose the Blind Captain goes to war in a desperate attempt to find his daughter before she is sold into slavery.
Director Huo Suiqiang creates an efficient action film that rarely dwells on the nastier parts of the story thankfully (e.g., the sex abuse and trafficking). The film’s set pieces are well constructed and do their work. There are moments of humor provided by a corrupt cop but these at every turn fall flat. Luckily these are kept to a minimum as well. However, the magical construct of a blind avenger has every cliché in the book. So much so they become a distraction no matter how elegantly they are presented here.
Blind War is a fun Saturday morning matinee-style action film diversion.
The Transfer
The transfer provided to Well Go USA is flawless. The digitally shot film looks crisp and sharp on Blu-Ray. The handsome image has no issues with handling the color reproduction or contrast and black levels.
The Extras
They include the following;
Trailer
Trailer (1:51) – in Mandarin with English Subtitles
The Final Thought
You could do much worse than Blind War in the action thriller genre.
