Our Fantasia Film Festival 2026 coverage closes out with the Thai Cyberpunk Martial Arts film God Skin.
The Fight Tournament film dark, twisted cyberpunk overhaul in director Paween Purijitpanya’s spectacular God Skin. Clichés and tropes get a new spin under the guise of AI tech enhancements and nanobots assisting fighters as they compete in brutal bloodsport that’s inspired by Wrestling, MMA, and Anime.
Marwin (Sutthirak Subvijitra) is trying to do right by his sick mother, but when they’re kicked out of their apartment, she ends up in the hospital with a stack of bills. Luck would have it that Marwin has run into his schoolmate It (Itkron Pungkiatrussamee), who is a manager in a cyberpunk fighting ring. With the help of a nerdy fanboy called Nerdass (Tanawat Cheawaram) and his high school sweetheart Praewa (Phantira Pipityakorn), Marwin slowly rises through the ranks of this brutally taxing sport. But is there more at work here than a simple fight for the entertainment of the rich???
One can only hope that trailers do not ruin what’s a truly twisted and brilliant remix of the subgenre made so popular in the 1980s. The twists and turns that God Skin takes and the points it makes feel like are as much the point as the action scenes. Like other films in the cyberpunk genre, it’s better to allow this one to wash over you, going in with little to no knowledge of what you’re in store for. Needless to say, the ride that one will go on far exceeds the fighting arena.
Director Paween Purijitpanya and his co-writers Jirawat Watthanakiatpanya, Kittikun Chattongkum, and Pat Pataranutaporn have concocted a Molotov cocktail of a film. A great martial arts film but also a dark, intelligent, sharply observed sci-fi film. It manages the rare feat of being a film that balances its multiple genres perfectly. Beyond the tonal balance, God Skin’s story allows the genres to inform the other as though they are critiquing each other, though not a parody; rather, a perfect blend. One that hides its secrets in plain sight so well that it will have you wanting to instantly revisit it.
God Skin delivers as one of the surprise genre films of the year.
