Our Fantasia Film Festival 2026 coverage continues with the unique Japanese Werewolf film When You Open the Door.
Director Eriko Katagiri’s debut When You Open the Door is more of a meditation on loneliness and the distance between humans in modern life than an outright Werewolf movie. A horror film for those who love the films of Sofia Coppola and the more methodical will find a wellspring of meaning in a film that refuses to give easy answers.
Architect (or at least a draftsman) Miki (Motola Serena) leads a quiet, strange life that feels even Miki herself cannot distinguish her dreaming and waking life. One is even surprised to learn that Miki is in a relationship, though even that feels muted and distant. When at lunch she is bitten by a werewolf, one isn’t sure if it is something real or imagined. As Miki’s journey and awakening have begun, nights become more alive as days become filled with clinical visits to doctors’ offices and tests; can the young woman endure the transformation in the suffocating toxicity of modern life?
A quiet, almost whisper of a film, it lulls you into its story of unease and struggle against modernity. Katagiri’s film is as much a feminist tale of growth as it is about mental health and just how much women must keep secret from everyone, including their doctors and fellow females. Star Motola Serena creates a devastating portrait of a young woman who is ill at ease with even the smallest of interactions.
The greatest part of the film is its rejection of the normal werewolf tropes of someone gaining confidence or animal instincts. The film is much too wise for that. It gives Miki some solace, even a moment of hope when she finds a group of women who may understand her plight. In those fleeting moments, Miki is alive, awake, and present to the world and group years older than her. The path the character goes on is subtly devastating and heartbreaking, with Serena never overreaching. It’s her center of gravity that allows the film to soar in its final moments. It’s her work that makes you ache for some sort of victory, and when in those final moments there is a reveal, it feels earned.
When You Open the Door is a film that one will need to sit with and ruminate on. It does not easily give you its answers. It is an announcement of a unique voice in world cinema that hopefully continues to grow.
