$POSITIONS is the kind of dread-inducing anxiety “comedy” about the kind of worst-case scenario when you are ill-equipped to make adult decisions. Writer/Director Brandon Daley understands the desperation and selfishness of the current era.
Mike (Michael Kunicki) fancies himself a financial investor. When one of his cryptocurrencies hits, it begins a downward spiral that sees his life turn into a living nightmare. From his disabled brother to his recovering cousin to his alcoholic father, no one is spared from Mike’s investments and doubling, tripling, and quadrupling down on crypto.
For those who can handle the sort of anxiety-inducing gutter dive into oblivion, they will have found their new film to obsess over. There is a sort of artfulness to the despair within the storytelling, finding evolving ways to take characters down into the misery hole of the American Nightmare. Like the beer bong filled with bodily fluids that continues on and on, turning from funny to gross to funny again to just plain sad, $POSITIONS shows the desperation of a character so lost he doesn’t know when to stop.
Ultimately, $POSITIONS is the kind of film that one must respect for the type of laser focus and specific humor that it succeeds at dispensing stylishly. A movie in its last third that brings together every bit of setup to create one of the more dread-filled finales of recent memory. $POSITIONS is a one-of-a-kind comedic tour-de-force in existential financial dread.
