A group of twenty-somethings at a vacation spot face off against the most unexpected of forces in The Draft! playing at Fantastic Fest 2024!
The biggest advice for anyone going to see The Draft! either at the festival or post-festival is to go in as blind as you can. Know the basics of the plot but not the big reveal. The Draft! and its ultimate evil is something so self-reflective and so meta that Charlie Kauffman would chuckle at the notion. Not just a high concept with nowhere to go, director/co-writer Yurson Fuadi has created an adroit satire of horror films beyond just the cabin-in-the-wood troupe it begins with.
The setup is simple; five college-age friends go on vacation to a secluded home and must contend with the evilest of dark forces. The friends not only must face off against ever ever-changing manner of lesser imps and demons but also figure out how to beat the ultimate dark force there seems to be no ultimate solution.
The Draft! is as clever a concept for a meta-horror film since Cabin in the Woods. Much like that now modern classic relies heavily on your knowledge of horror films and their troupes. The Draft! characters do comment on their situation and how it evolves with a cheekiness that manages to be funny but in the way that there is real danger to what is happening to them. What elevates the film is how the “dark forces” adjust to the character’s attacks and defenses.
Few films with such a high concept can actually execute beyond the concept luckily for audiences The Draft! does succeed. This one will resonate with horror fans with or without detailed knowledge of the reveal of the ultimate force pulling the strings.
The Draft! played Fantastic Fest 2024 September 20th and plays again September 25th
